Our Story | Wylie Juneteenth Organization
Historical significance

Why Juneteenth Matters

Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history—the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free. This came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially outlawed slavery in Confederate states on January 1, 1863.

The delay in Texas was due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the executive order. When the news finally arrived, it was met with jubilation and marked the true end of slavery in the United States.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated as a day of reflection, remembrance, and celebration of African American freedom and achievement. It's a time to honor our ancestors' resilience, celebrate Black culture, and continue working toward equality and justice for all.
